Deputy Director – Sustainable Engineering Group – Curtin University, Australia
Professor Wahidul Biswas is a Deputy Director of Sustainable Engineering Group at the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering in Curtin University. He has carried out extensive life cycle assessment research on greenhouse gas emissions from the Australian agricultural, alternative fuels, building and construction, manufacturing, mining and water sectors. He recently completed a project on the LCA of iron ore/steel, alumina and cement with Australian National University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Adelaide for South 32, FMG, Rio Tinto, Alcoa, GFG, Adelaide Brighton, which enabled him to secure two ongoing projects on green steel and green certification from the Australian National University. He teaches and coordinates postgraduate units on Life Cycle Management, Industrial Ecology, Eco-efficiency and an undergraduate unit on Ethics and Sustainability in Engineering. Wiley just published his textbook on Engineering for Sustainable Development: Theory and Practice which he developed based on his 17 years teaching at Curtin. He is a member of the Standards Australia and Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committees for ME-092-09-10 – GHG emissions from LNG. He had received project funding of around Australian Dollar 3 million in 2003-2024, in the area of sustainable engineering both as a Lead Investigator and an Investigator.
Dr Eisa Abdellatif is a distinguished environmental scientist with a rich academic and professional background. He graduated with first-class honors in Biology from the University of Khartoum, Sudan, in 1977. He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Kansas, USA, in 1985. Dr Eisa then returned to Sudan, where he taught for 13 years at the University of Khartoum. During this time, he founded the first Bachelor of Environmental Studies program in the Middle East and Africa at Omdurman Ahlia University.
Dr Eisa is a longstanding member of the Sudan Environment Conservation Society and served as its President from 1992 to 1997. His career further extended internationally, as he was seconded to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as Chief Technical Advisor for the UN Project to develop Environmental Management Systems for the Abu Dhabi Municipality (1997–98). He was later appointed as Chief Technical Advisor to establish the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment in Dubai, where he worked for 23 years. In addition, Dr Eisa served as an Adjunct Professor of Environmental Sciences at the Dubai Police Academy, teaching in the M.Sc. program on Law & Environment.
He is the Founder and President of Bi’ati Organisation, an environmental awareness NGO based in Khartoum, with branches in Port Sudan, Sudan, and Kampala, Uganda. Dr Eisa’s expertise spans a wide range of fields, including Project and Environmental Management, Environmental Education, Environmental Impact Assessment, Scientific Editing and Writing, Scuba Diving, and Nature Photography. He has authored and edited numerous books and scientific papers and serves as the editor for the “World of Environment” book series published by the Zayed International Foundation for the Environment.
In addition to his academic and professional work, Dr Eisa is a Registered Expert at the Dubai International Arbitration Centre and an active environmental activist. He is also a member of various NGOs in Sudan, the USA, and the UAE.

Dr Marc A Rosen is a Professor of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Ontario Tech University (formerly University of Ontario Institute of Technology) in Oshawa, Canada, where he served as founding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Dr. Rosen has served as President of the Engineering Institute of Canada and of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. He has acted in many professional capacities, including Editor-in-Chief of various journals and a Director of Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation.
With over 70 research grants and contracts and 900 technical publications, including numerous books, Dr Rosen is an active teacher and researcher in sustainable energy, sustainability, and environmental impact. Much of his research has been carried out for industry. Dr. Rosen has other areas of expertise, including the following: exergy analysis, heat transfer, thermodynamics, integrated energy systems, modelling and simulation of energy systems, renewable energy, thermal energy storage, and phase change materials for battery cooling.
In his research, Dr Marc A Rosen has applied advanced thermodynamic techniques such as exergy analysis and other methods based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics to understand, assess, improve and optimize energy and other engineering systems. He has examined air thermal energy storage, including phase change systems, with various heat transfer configurations, and applied heat transfer and fluids engineering in his work. Recently. he has investigated and developed thermal performance management systems for batteries and battery packs, for applications in vehicles as well as fixed facilities.
Dr Rosen has worked for such organizations as Imatra Power Company in Finland, Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, the Institute for Hydrogen Systems near Toronto, and Ryerson University in Toronto, where he served as Chair the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Industrial Engineering.
Dr Rosen has received numerous awards and honors, including an Award of Excellence in Research and Technology Development from the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Engineering Institute of Canada Smith Medal for achievement in the development of Canada, and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering Angus Medal for outstanding contributions to the management and practice of mechanical engineering. He received a distinguished scholar award from Ryerson University and a Mid-Career Award from University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the International Energy Foundation.

Dr Ben Milbourn is Associate Professor, (teaching and research) in Occupational Therapy at Curtin School of Allied Health-Curtin University. Ben trained as an occupational therapist (OT) in the United Kingdom (UK), working in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK practicing occupational therapy in mental health and disability contexts. Ben undertook a PhD at Curtin University in occupational therapy, focusing on the occupational meaning of everyday activity of people who experience severe mental illness. Ben is Deputy Director of Curtin Autism Research Group (CARG) and is interested in research with a strong community focus, working alongside autistic individuals to promote social inclusion, well-being and positive mental health. Ben is passionate about co-produced research and developing strengths-based programs in the community. The work of CARG is underpinned by a philosophy of “Nothing about you without you” with all projects either being co-lead or informed by autistic individuals themselves (Photovoice study co-produced with autistic adults). CARG is fundamentally committed to impact and translation, frequently holding community and virtual events, informing the community of the latest evidence-based practice. Ben has been successful in public, industry and teaching research grants as well as presenting his research outputs at international and national conferences. Ben was part of the team to develop a strengths-based program for autistic adolescents. This program won a prestigious local (western Australia Premier Science award) national award (Business/Higher Education Round Table (BHERT) and internationally (Entrepreneurship, Engagement & Excellence in Higher Education-Triple E) for harnessing and recognising the special talents and dedication of autistic young people.

Professor Dr. Rachel Sheffield has reviewed multiple awards that recognise her expertise in education. She was commissioned by UNESCO, where she worked under the Director of UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, focusing on global citizenship education (GCED) in the Asia-Pacific region. She led the Curtin Academy International Interdisciplinary Industry Study Program, overseeing projects totaling $792,000, and created the Curtin Extra program to foster leadership development. She serves as a Senior Assessor for the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT), where she evaluates higher education teaching excellence. Additionally, she was an assessor for the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) iSOLT grants and a reviewer of the international ERFP 28th Grant at the National Institute of Education Singapore. In partnership with industry, she explored a new platform to track school students’ STEM skill acquisition and was an invited Plenary Speaker at EdTech 2023 She developed a Curtin Micro Credentials platform, focusing on design thinking and the UN SDGs. Rachel holds a Principal Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (PHEA), and she is currently the outgoing chair of the Curtin Academy.
